Strategy: Citadell Buster

Talfus

Been giving some thought about Citadell Buster.

Looked at all the different equipment with Resist v.s. light and came up with ~ 120 light resist.

I know there's no barlightra but is there a light carol?

also does anyone think it's even worth trying something like this to help cut the damage?

There's a carol for every element in the game <.<

This will bring you to.. 180 light resist total. Not nearly enough for a reliable resist rate.

I bet war/nin who went crazy on HP could do interesting things w/ citadel buster. How high can you get HP to?

Last time we had Garret tank Ultima and he dident die ones. We had a COR do Mages roll for Mag.DEF and it lookd like it helpd alot.

Of all the jobs, WAR has second highest base HP. MNK being first obviously... PLD trailing slightly behind WAR.

With HP food, I can get my HP on war to almost 1800 as Hume WAR/NIN.

And I don't have a gigant mantle and a couple other HP pieces.

EDIT: I'll figure out how high I can get my HP with pieces I don't have yet once I get back to whitegate in a couple mins.

I have fully merited HP, btw.

Current HP without food as WAR75/NIN37: 1655 (+ High Breath Mantle active)

Current HP with Carbonara(+170HP): 1830 (+ High Breath Mantle active)

Total enmity(before merits): +25

Items needed: Gigant Mantle(+80HP), Ocean Sash(+45HP)

------------------------------

Modified Current HP without food as WAR75/NIN37: 1780

Modified Current HP with Carbonara (+170HP): 1955

Total enmity(before merits): +20

What type of damage were you taking from Citadel Buster, Garret? I can show you what I was taking as a NIN/WAR, but this was prior to Magus Roll/Shell and I have no food effect because of the Dispelga food wipe.

I seem to remember you being at around 1900+ and having a remaining 300-600 or so after Citadel Buster was complete. Is that a good estimate?

If you'll notice in two of my screenshots, I didn't have shell or any type of Magic D enhancements. I think that with a high Magic Defense set, we may be able to really soften the blow (and it'd actually give merit to some of the new Magic D equipment released recently).

Proto-Ultima SS#1
Proto-Ultima SS#2
Proto-Ultima SS#3

I know you've seen screenshots of that PLD taking a full Citadel Buster for ~900 with Aegis, I think a specific focus on Magic Defense will absorb the blow. You've got plenty of time to gear up a full set with his countdown, you know damn well it's coming when he prepares to do it. If you've got enough MP for a Shell and time to equip yourself for the blow, I really think you can make surviving this move the norm.

I know items like the Lamia Mantle and one of the throwing weapons or Lamia Bows actually have Magic Defense on them. I'm not sure whether the Coral Ring/Mermans Earring would help, but they reduce magic damage instead of adding to Magic D.

I believe I was at 2029HP when I switched into HP mood, Carbonara included in that.

I took anywhere from 1400-1900 damage.

I believe I survived 7 of them or so? Not sure offhand how many it was. I wasn't using any Magic Defense or Light Resist gear except for having Magus' roll.

Reading some posts on KI about this I did not find any case of people being able to get a significant resist rate with just light equip, one poster said they used both a light resist build & magus' roll & they were not taking any less than the minimum damage I had experienced around 1400-1500 or so.

I would say with Magus' roll any job capable of hitting 2k+ could reliably survive CB but would have to have shadows afterwards as he would often cast Holy II right after using CB.

I took citadel buster twice, I believe as nin/war on the Proto-Ultima I took part in.

First was only for 1400 or so(max HP was over that but I wasn't at full, so I died obviously), second one for 1800 or 1900ish which I had no chance of surviving in my gear setup.

I think WAR/NIN can work.. problem is, you need two gear setups - haste setup so you dont die + HP setup so you don't die during CB. Mages need to cure you to full once you switch to +HP setup since you can't cure yourself... or bring lots of hi-potions, which I have my doubts you'd have inventory space for ;x

You would need at least 17% haste, I figure. Walahra Turban(5%)+Byakko's Haidate(5%)+Swift Belt(4%)+Dusk Gloves(3%) = 17%.

At least 1900HP... dont stop there though, I'd try to push it as high as I possibly could.

And reflexes... no mage in their right mind is going to wait 30 seconds for you to switch gear. Do it fast, and make sure the alliance knows you have hate fast.

NIN still works though. Ultima is evadable, he is DD-able, you'll just probably die to CB and lose a little exp - something a nin can afford to throw around unlike silly plds ;x

I felt like sidelining as Pld most of the fight while letting the Nin's DD/Tank and then taking over for hate at low HP to survive CB worked pretty well. I'm not sure that a Nin/War can push up enough HP to reliably survive CB, although Predaking may shed some light on that if he knows how much HP he is able to push as Nin if he tries.

One of the nins on KI says he pushes his HP to like 1800-1900 for Tiamat, abandons all enmity basically (his theory is, most of the hate is off of TAs so enmity doesnt make much of a difference).

I've not really tried it myself.
