To the sprouts: please understand that this game is not "pay to win"!

I'm saying this because of something I just saw in the Novice Network. A guy said he was stuck at level 12 and couldn't progress any further. We were all "???" until he said that he'd read online that the MSQ was 250+ hours, so he asked AI (!!) the most efficient way to level up, and it told him to buy the skip from the cash shop. He is now essentially locked out of the game and down $25 because he didn't realise the skip just skips the story and doesn't level him up alongside it.

Since the game has an influx of new players after the Switch 2 port, I will say as a crusty old player that the most useful thing to learn is that you cannot outrun the grind. You are looking at hundreds to thousands of hours of interactive and important story in this game alongside a wealth of side quests, job quests, dungeons, and other unlockable content. You might find that you need to complete an ARR side quest to unlock another quest chain to unlock ANOTHER quest chain that unlocks a quest chain in Endwalker, for example.

If you're not particularly story-driven, my advice is to have a goal or aim in mind and work towards it. It can be as silly or serious as you want; when I started my goal was to progress to Machinist, and when I unlocked that my new goal became to progress to unlocking Solution Nine so I could get the Vamp framer kit. A goal will keep you motivated to play because while the story is amazing it can be a bit of a slog in ARR; I personally didn't really lock in until probably the post-Heavensward patch quests. You can skip every cutscene, but the game in my opinion is markedly more boring when you have literally no clue who anyone is or what's going on.

Overall, please have fun playing, but think twice about playing (especially in regards to spending money) if you're not a fan of very long games with a heavy focus on grinding.
